Chamaecyparis

Postby RichLewis » Wed Dec 23, 2009 9:50 pm

Hello

Here's a Chamaecyparis I've been working on for a couple of years. I bought it in 2008, and chopped it in late spring/early summer.

In February 2009 I repotted the tree in cat litter, and fertilised it heavily. I returned to the tree in December and cut it back heavily, to prevent dieback which can occur very easily with this genus. Chamaecyparis don't bud from old wood, but they are very hardy and viorous in the UK climate.

Attached is a rough vitual. It's one possible future, what do you think? I wanted to graft a branch onto the back of the tree, as most of the branches are on the sides. We'll see, there is no rush to develop it.

Cheers

Hello

I re-assessed the tree recently.

A) Will be wired and trained to point down in the future; I'm letting it grow and regain strength for now.
B) Should be the new leader, I will wire a branchlet down and let the rest form the apex.
C) I notched this branch at the base and wired it towards the back of the tree
D) I was considering jinning this one, for now I drilled at the base to weaken the wood and guy-wired it down,

The blue arrow shows where I removed a branch, it was too thick and I couldn't bring the foliege close to the trunk, no matter which way I wired it. I drilled through the trunk, and guy-wired it to add some more movement.

The red line shows where I want to chop in the future. I will wait for the first chop to heal first. For now, I have left some of the lower branching, but I will remove this in a few years.

Cheers
