Pinus parifolia

Hello

I posted this in the wrong place, sorry about that!

Here is my White Pine (P. parifolia; Goyomatsu) after almost 2 years of development. It was a gift from my uncle, who was unable to take care of it due to time constraints.

I received the tree in May 2008. It was potted in a poor, sandy soil So I removed about a third of the rootball and repotted with some free-draining medium. As the tree is very old (70+), I didn't want to do too much at once. You can see the buds that formed this April, and the current pictures of the tree; front and back (more or less). I had removed one or two branches and thinned out the dead and dying foliege when I first received the tree.

Now there is fresh new growth, but getting it to backbud is a challenge. This winter I will needle pluck it to divert energy to the weaker areas, and also continue candle pruning in the spring. My father is looking after it at the moment, the tags on the branches indicate where and to what extent the candles should be pruned, which was done this spring 2009. We will re-asess the tree in the spring to see where the strong and weak areas are.

So please provide any comments and advice if you like. I want to try and get it in a shallow wooden pot soon, and remove more of the old soil. I'm not too worried about styling really for now, although the tree will require some minor tweaking in the future I think. What do you think?

I would estimate the trunk to be about 12cm thick, and the tree itself is about 85cm high.

cheers

I plucked some of the older needles off the tree on Christmas Eve. This should have been done in October, but I wasn't round at that time. I also pruned back some of the denser branches to allow light into the lower levels.

There was some backbudding, mostly around the top of the tree. I plan to repot the tree this spring when the buds start to extend.
